Erosion / Groundwater

Water is the most powerful force on a landscape — and without the right roots in the ground to slow it down, it takes the soil with it. Every rainstorm that runs off a bare hillside, every flood that undercuts a stream bank, every field edge that creeps a little closer to the ditch each spring — these are the quiet costs of land without adequate tree and shrub cover. The good news is that the solution is as natural as the problem.

Deep-rooted native trees and shrubs are among the most effective erosion control tools available. Along stream banks and waterways, species like willows, cottonwoods, and native alders anchor soil with aggressive root systems that hold firm even in high water events, filtering sediment and keeping banks intact. On hillsides and field edges, strategically planted trees slow runoff, allow water to infiltrate rather than race across the surface, and gradually rebuild the soil structure that erosion strips away over time.

The benefits reach well below the surface too. Where trees and shrubs are established, rainfall is absorbed more slowly and deeply, recharging groundwater reserves and keeping streams and wetlands flowing longer into dry seasons. Riparian buffers of native plantings act as natural filters, intercepting fertilizers and sediment before they reach the water — protecting not just your land, but the broader watershed around it.

If you have a stream, a pond, a wet draw, or a hillside that's losing ground, we can help you identify the right species to stabilize, filter, and restore it — one root system at a time.
